Voted in 2006 by a group of ten European media as number three on a list of the top ten orchestras including the Orchestra after Vienna Philharmonic and the Royal Concert, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (German: Die Berliner Philharmoniker) has played an important musical and cultural life of the German capital. The Concert Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic is the primary Philharmonic, located in the city Kulturforum. Simon Rattle has been principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic since 2002. Funded by the city of Berlin, in cooperation with Deutsche Bank, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is also compatible with various chamber music ensembles.
Founded by 54 musicians in the spring of 1882 under the name "Frühere Bilsesche Kapelle" (translation literal: "Former Bilse Band") in 1882, the players form a dissident group that President Benjamin Bilse announced its intention to take the group on a train fourth class to Warsaw for a concert. Under the financial leadership of Hermann Wolff in 1887, the orchestra was reorganized and given its present name. Ludwig Brenner became the first director of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1887, Hans von Bülow, one of the most respected chefs around the world, joined, thus establishing the reputation the orchestra. Berlin, a series of other composers estimated / drivers such as Hans Richter, Felix Weingartner, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, Johannes Brahms and Edvard Grieg.
In 1985, Arthur Nikisch became head of the head, and replaced by Wilhelm
Furtwängler. After Furtwängler fled to Switzerland In 1945, Leo Borchard became principal conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin, but that arrangement lasted only a few months when shot Borchard accidentally by U.S. occupation forces Berlin. Sergiu Celibidache took over as director in chief from 1945 to 1952.
Furtwängler returned in the same year and led the orchestra until his death in 1954.
With the ascent to the podium as conductor of the glamorous, dynamic and controversial (due to complaints concerning its possible accession to the Nazi Party), Herbert von Karajan in 1955, the Berlin Philharmonic has entered a period of extraordinary activity, marked by numerous recordings and world tours. Herbert von Karajan resigned in April 1989, several months before his death.
After von Karajan, director of conductor Claudio Abbado became director of the Berlin Philharmonic, expanding the orchestra's repertoire beyond the classical warhorses and romantic movement in 20th century works of art. Abbado resigned in 2002.
During the period after reunification, the Berlin Philharmonic had to deal with financial problems resulting budget tension in the city of Berlin.
Simon Rattle was elected as chief conductor in 1999 by musicians of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin. Rattle is a condition of their contract that the Berlin Philharmonic became a self-administration Public Foundation, with the power of his artistic and
financial decisions. This implied a change in state law passed in 2001, allowing Mr. Rattle join the organization in 2002. Initially, the contract with Mr. Rattle was the director until 2012, but in 2008 the Berlin Philharmonic, voted to maintain as its conductor laureate.
